Why Dental Implants

If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth you may greatly benefit from having dental implants placed. Your smile is an extremely undervalued asset. It is the basic foundation for your personality. A healthy smile impacts both your self-confidence and self-esteem. Beyond the perception of your smile, when you are missing teeth it can also cause a range of health issues if left untreated, including the following:

  • Difficulty eating: Depending upon where your missing tooth/teeth are located, you may find it difficult to enjoy certain foods as your ability to chew properly may be diminished. This in turn can result in digestion issues, such as acid reflux.
  • Speech difficulties: Patients who have a missing tooth or teeth often find they develop difficulty pronouncing certain words, and may also experience slurring, involuntary spitting, or whistling when speaking.
  • Jawbone loss: A missing tooth or teeth left untreated for too long is the leading cause of jawbone loss. Teeth play a unique role in supporting and stimulating the jawbone. If the jawbone does not receive this support and stimulation, it will begin to atrophy.
  • Shifting: When one or more teeth are missing, shifting can be consequentially accelerated and create a domino effect that impacts the entire bite.
  • Malocclusion: When a patient’s bite has become compromised due to shifting, a range of issues related to this malocclusion can develop, such as TMJD, loss of additional teeth, muscle pain, tooth sensitivity, headaches, and more.
  • Aged appearance: As the jawbone begins to atrophy, your face will begin to sag and sink, making you appear older than you are.

CONTACT ROOT™

Scheduling regular visits to maintain your teeth and gums will actively improve your overall health, and maintaining a bright and strong healthy smile will do wonders for your self-confidence.

The Dental Implant Process

If dental implants will be right for you, you need to schedule an initial consultation. We will review the overall health of your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and decide what options are best to treat your unique needs.

If we find out that dental implants will be suitable for your situation the first step is to confirm the decision by taking x-rays to assess the density of the jawbone. Then the procedure begins by numbing the gums with a local anesthesia. Once they are properly numbed, your periodontist will create a small incision in your soft tissue to gain access to the jawbone. Next, a small hole is drilled into the jawbone into which the titanium post will be placed. A temporary restoration will be placed, which needs to be worn until the jawbone has sufficient time to grow around the implant, which might take several months. This process (osseointegration), the growing or fusing of the post to the jawbone, determines the durability and strength of the dental implant and it is the most important step. Once complete, the abutment or extension is added, and the permanent artificial crown is then adhered to the extension. And just like that you have a healthy smile again.

Two exceptions to this simple procedure can be if you need a tooth extracted prior to starting the procedure, or if the x-ray shows that some bone grafting needs to be done to improve the density of your jawbone.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a surgical procedure that connects a dental prosthesis, a ceramic or porcelain artificial crown, to the jawbone. Dental implants are now the new gold standard in the health industry for patients who are missing teeth who would prefer something more permanent than dentures.

Implants are composed of these three parts:

  • A Base: Screw post made of titanium, which is unique in its ability to fuse with bone. Provides a stable base for the implants
  • An Extension or Abutment (connector): Joins the prosthesis, or crown, to the implant, or post
  • A Crown: The artificial tooth part of the implant, typically made of porcelain or other ceramic material to mimic the natural look of your surrounding teeth

Costs Associated with Dental Implants

There are a several factors that can impact the final cost of having a dental implant or implants, such how serious your case is, the location of the tooth, if any sedation is required, any associated procedures that will need to be performed prior to or along with treatment, as well as your insurance plan.

Our ROOT Periodontal team is committed to helping you complete the necessary paperwork, to schedule all your appointments, and to answer any questions you have concerning billing. The Aftercare for Dental Implants

Following your dental implant procedure, it is advised to stick to a soft food diet for the first two weeks. Then slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing process progresses. There will be  no additional aftercare instructions you will need to follow after this temporary modification of your diet, although it is quite important to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day, and ideally every time you brush your teeth. It is also important to practice solid, proper brushing and flossing techniques and to continue regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. By consistently maintaining a preventative oral health care routine, you will seriously reduce your risk of developing any additional periodontal issues, your dental implants will last considerably longer, and you can continue to enjoy a healthy smile for years to come.
