Older woman eating a scone after getting bar retained implant supported dentures by her Carrollton periodontist at ROOT™ Periodontal and Implant Center. For the longest time, individuals faced with tooth loss had only one option, removable dentures. Dentures are still a popular treatment today. Many developments have been made over the years that have made them look much more realistic. Today, however, you have another option. At ROOT™ Periodontal and Implant Center, we can provide dental implants and a bar retained implant supported dentures.

The Disadvantages of Traditional Dentures

While traditional dentures are still a common treatment and have undergone numerous developments to improve them greatly, there are still a few significant disadvantages. These include
•  Slipping out of place or even falling out, which can lead to embarrassment.
•  Rubbing your gums to cause painful sores.
•  Additional care every night, which can become tedious.
•  The need for replacement every few years.

What is a Bar Retained Implant Supported Denture?

A bar retained implant supported denture, also called a bar attachment denture, is a type of treatment for replacing missing teeth that provides you with a long-term solution to tooth loss. The bar retained denture uses dental implants to support an arch of replacement teeth. The implants are surgically placed into your jawbone at specific angles to maximize contact with existing bone mass. This allows you to avoid the need for a bone graft while providing optimal support for your new teeth once the bone has fused completely to the posts. A titanium bar is attached to the posts after they are placed into your jaw. Your final restorations, which are fabricated before implant surgery, clip into place on the bar, providing you with a perfectly restored smile that can be cared for just like your real teeth.

How is This Treatment Different from Regular Implants?

There are multiple differences between a bar retained implant supported denture and regular implant supported dentures. One major difference is the number of posts used. A regular implant supported denture uses 6 to 8 posts to support an arch of replacement teeth. Bar-retained denture uses only four posts. With a regular implant supported denture, you need to have enough bone mass in your jaw to provide support for all of the necessary posts. A bar retained denture is suitable for patients who have suffered some bone loss and may not be able to support 6 or more implant posts.

Another significant difference between bar retained dentures and regular implant supported dentures is the length of the recovery. With regular implant supported dentures, healing can last up to several months. During this time, you are often wearing temporary teeth. Several follow up visits ensure proper healing. Once you have fully healed, then the process for creating your final teeth begins, which can take an additional two or more appointments. With a bar retained denture, you have fewer implants, which reduces the amount of time required to recover. Additionally, your final restorations are immediately clipped into place following surgery. This helps to reduce the number of necessary follow up visits.

What are the Benefits of Bar Retained Dentures?

With bar retained implant supported dentures, you are provided with all of the same benefits that other types of dental implants offer. They offer superior comfort, they are easy to take care of, and they provide a long-term solution to tooth loss. Other benefits of a bar retained dental implant include
•  Less surgery is required.
•  Your recovery period is shorter.
•  You get your final restorations the same day as your surgery.
•  You avoid the need for a bone graft.
•  Bar retained implant supported dentures are more affordable than a regular implant supported denture.

With bar retained implant supported dentures, you can enjoy all of the same benefits of regular dental implants at a more affordable cost.
